Trailblazers

Fifth District Elementary School

Trailblazers
Trailblazers are a group of students interested in learning about and improving the environment in their community.

Mission Statement
Our goal is to become actively involved toward the resolution of environmental problems by protecting and enhancing the life cycles of natural habitats in the areas surrounding our school. We will make every effort to preserve and protect our environment.

  • The club started in 2004 with 23 students, 3 teachers and 3 parents. In 2004 the Trailblazers created a rain garden and meadow on the school grounds. They led the entire school in planting 1,000 plants on the school grounds.
  • In 2005 Trailblazers consists of 42 students, 7 teachers, and 2 parents. Trailblazers are working with Matt Ewell, a local area Boy Scout, to maintain and improve the rain garden and meadow, to clean up the Outdoor Classroom, to create a nature trail, and to make signs and label native plants in these areas. They will be leading the school again this year in adding plants to the rain garden and meadow. Planting Day will be Wednesday, May 25, 2005.
  • Trailblazers wrote and received a grant from the Chesapeake Bay Foundation for their projects in 2005.
  • Fifth District Elementary School has been reinstated as a Maryland Green School. The ceremony to honor our school will be held on June 1, 2005.
